American History Essay Contest

Open to Grades 5 through 8

Length:  (Grade 5) 300-600 words

(Grades 6, 7, 8)  600-1,000 words

Topic: “Stars and Stripes Forever

Students are asked to:

“Imagine it is 1897 and you are a newspaper reporter         for ‘The Philadelphia Times.”

Your editor has asked you to write an article about John Phillip Sousa’s new march ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’ first played on May 14, 1897. Your article needs to tell us about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song. It is the first performance of the song, so make sure your article includes your thoughts about the music and how the audience reacts to what is seen and heard that day.”

Each essay must include a completed Submission Form. 

Essay must also have a list of all resources utilized.  [Four individual resources are expected. Internet resources, if used, should include the electronic address.]

All entrants to this year’s contest will receive a certificate.

Winners will be selected at each grade level by the Davey Jackson Chapter and will receive a medal and monetary award.

The chapter winners will advance to the Wyoming state level competition.  The Wyoming State winners will advance to the divisional level.  The divisional winners will advance to the national level. The National winners will receive a certificate, pin and monetary award.

 Patriots of the American Revolution

DAR High School Essay Contest

Open to Grades 9 through 12

Length: 800 and 1,200 words

Topic:

Select a figure from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783). Discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, who he or she was and his/her contribution to the founding of a new nation. Your figure may be any person, whether a well-known figure or an everyday man, woman or child who supported the American Revolution in ways large or small.

All essay submissions must include a Title Page and Bibliography.  [Four or more resources are expected. The bibliography should be cited in a standard, recognized citation style (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.). Students are encouraged to use primary sources and cite them.]

All entrants to this year’s contest will receive a certificate.
